W#8 Fat Beats And Some Code with Sonic Pi

W#8 Fat Beats And Some Code with Sonic Pi

v. Tommi Toivonen
Do you want to learn how to code and create music at the same time? Sonic Pi is a creative programming environment created for both educators and musicians! It’s one of the simplest tools to get started with learning the very basics of programming, and you can have a lot of fun by doing so! Programming can be a form of self-expression and Sonic Pi is a great example of that!
During the workshop, we’ll also take a look how you can connect Sonic Pi to physical music making devices (such as small synthesizers) and Mehackit’s very own Music Machine (which is an Arduino based drum machine using physical motors)!
Relevance
Sonic Pi is all about music, maths, ICT and programming. So any person curious about technology, creativity and music should join this workshop! Mehackit also provides learning materials for educators and students, so after this workshop it’s relatively easy for you to start teaching with Sonic Pi!
Participants
Maximum number of participants: ~ 12
No prior experience needed in coding or making electronic music. If you have basic skills of using a computer and a curious mind, you’ll be just fine.
Demands for preparation
Before the workshop you’ll need to install Sonic Pi on your personal computer. You can get the latest version from here: http://sonic-pi.net/. We recommend using Mac OS, Windows or Raspberry Pi 3 computer as the latest Sonic Pi version is available only for them. Bring your computer and a pair of headphones with you to the workshop!
Technology
I’ll bring a laptop (for showing Sonic Pi and code instructions). Additionally, I’ll bring some music gadgets (like a small synthesizer or Mehackit Music Machine) for playing with connecting Sonic Pi to external hardware.
Materials
Above mentioned. I can’t bring synths to all participants though, but the participants can test them in pairs!
